If the thin area on your head is mainly at the crown or parting, a clip-in hair topper can be a quick way to add fullness. It is a small hair piece that clips into your own hair and blends with it. Choosing the right one makes the difference between a natural result and one that looks obvious. Here is what to look at before you buy.
A topper is a cosmetic hair piece. It does not treat hair loss. If you are worried about thinning, speak to your GP or pharmacist.
Is a topper right for you?
A topper suits you best when:
- Your thinning is mostly at the crown, the top or the parting, rather than all over
- You still have enough of your own hair around the area to clip onto
- You want a result you can put in and take out in minutes
If you are thinning across most of your head, or have little hair to clip onto, a different option may suit you better, and a specialist can advise you.
1. Base size
The base is the part that sits against your scalp. It needs to be big enough to cover the thin area, with a little extra, but not so big that its edges sit over areas where you have a lot of hair. Measure the thin area before you order, and compare it with the base size in the listing. Our clip-in topper has a 5 x 6 inch mono base.
2. Base type
- Mono base: a fine mesh that lets the scalp show through and looks natural at the parting. It is often breathable and lightweight.
- Lace base: a very fine, soft base that can blend well at the front, though it can be more delicate.
- Silk top: a smooth base that hides the knots where the hair is attached, for a natural look at the parting.
3. Hair type
Toppers come in human hair and synthetic hair. Human hair can be styled more like your own, but it needs more care. Synthetic is often cheaper but may not style or last in the same way. Check what the listing says, and be cautious about claims that can't be backed up.
4. Length
Choose a length that works with your own hair. A topper that is much longer than your hair can look obvious, while one that is closer to your length blends more easily. Our topper is 14 inches.
5. Shade
Match the topper to your hair colour in natural daylight, and look at your hair at the crown, not the ends. If your hair is a mix of colours or is greying, an exact match is harder. Some people blend the edges by styling their own hair over them, or by using a little fibre or root powder.
6. Clips and fit
Look for secure, comfortable clips. The topper should sit flat and feel steady without pulling on your hair. Tight clips can put strain on fragile hair, so avoid using too much tension.
How to fit and blend a topper
- Section your hair where you want the topper to sit.
- Line up the base with your natural parting or hairline.
- Clip it in securely, working from the front.
- Gently brush your own hair over the edges.
- Style it as you normally would and check it from different angles in daylight.
Looking after your topper
- Brush it gently, from the ends upwards.
- Wash it only when needed, using a mild shampoo and lukewarm water.
- Avoid sleeping in it, and take it out before swimming.
- Keep heat styling low, especially with synthetic hair.
Before you buy
Hair pieces are hygiene items, so they usually can't be returned once worn. Check the shade, length and base size carefully, and read the returns policy. If you're unsure, email us a photo and we'll help.
