Hair fibres are popular, but there is plenty of confusion around them. Here are seven common myths, and what is actually true.
Myth 1: Hair fibres make your hair grow back
Reality: they don't. Hair fibres are a cosmetic product. They make hair look fuller by clinging to the hair you already have, but they don't affect your hair follicles or how your hair grows. If you are worried about hair loss, speak to your GP or pharmacist.
Myth 2: Everyone will notice you are wearing them
Reality: with the right shade and a light touch, fibres blend into your hair and are very hard to spot. Most visible results come from using too much, or from a poor shade match. Apply thinly, build in layers and check in daylight.
Myth 3: They will stain your pillow and clothes
Reality: a small amount of transfer can happen, especially if you skip the hold spray or touch your hair a lot. Setting the fibres with a light mist of hold spray and brushing your hair before bed keeps this to a minimum.
Myth 4: They wash out in the first bit of rain
Reality: a light shower is usually fine if the fibres are well set, but heavy rain can wash some out. Carry an umbrella or wear a hat if heavy rain is forecast.
Myth 5: They damage your hair or scalp
Reality: fibres sit on top of your hair and wash out with shampoo, so they should not cause damage when used as directed. As with any cosmetic product, if you notice any irritation, stop using them. If you have a sensitive scalp, do a patch test first.
Myth 6: They only work for men
Reality: hair thinning affects people of all genders. Many women use fibres to fill in a wide parting or thin crown, and fibres come in a range of shades.
Myth 7: You need to use a lot
Reality: the opposite is true. A small amount goes a long way. Using too much looks powdery and falls off more easily. Start with a pinch, pat it in and add more only if you need it.
